A Taste of Italy – The Caffè Shakerato

The Caffè Shakerato

Every holiday deserves a signature drink. Whether you’re enjoying a peaceful morning on the terrace, taking a break from exploring charming villages, or watching the sun set with friends, the right drink can make those moments even more memorable.

One of our all-time favourites is the Caffè Shakerato. A refreshing Italian coffee specialty that perfectly captures the relaxed pace of an Italian summer.

An Italian Classic

The Caffè Shakerato originated in Italy, where coffee is a cherished daily ritual. During the warmer months, when a hot espresso feels a little too much, we often choose a Shakerato instead.

Its name comes from the English word shaker, as the drink is prepared by shaking a freshly brewed espresso with ice in a cocktail shaker. This simple technique chills the coffee instantly while creating its signature velvety texture and delicate, creamy foam.

One thing that often surprises visitors is that the traditional Caffè Shakerato is completely alcohol-free. It’s served in cafés and bars across Italy as a refreshing coffee drink, usually enjoyed during the day or after lunch. If you order a Shakerato in Italy, this is the version you’ll most likely be served.

In recent years, however, bartenders have given this classic a modern twist by adding coffee liqueur, vodka, or other spirits, creating an elegant after-dinner cocktail. While this isn’t the traditional recipe, it’s a delicious variation for those warm holiday evenings.
