Postcard from Lake Garda #2

A train from Gargnano to Salò 1920

Narrow streets, cafés humming softly, and the sun sparkling on the lake — then, suddenly, a small tram rumbles past your door, its wheels clattering over rails laid between the houses. Incredible today, but back then it was an everyday sight.

In December 1921, the tram finally reached Gargnano, linking the town with Salò and Brescia. It wasn’t just a means of transport: it carried goods, people, and news, weaving itself into the daily life of neighbors, carts, and visitors.

By the 1930s, faster cars and buses made the lakeside tracks obsolete. Today, almost nothing recalls the tram, yet if you look closely, traces remain: a bend in the road, a building, or an unusually wide street. History never truly disappears — it just waits to be discovered.
